A good dock turns a MacBook into a desk setup with one cable: displays, Ethernet, drives and charging. We picked docks for three budgets, plus a few rare ones that also hold an SSD, which is handy for Time Machine backups and big project folders.

Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C?

  • Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120 Gb/s): worth it for MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with M4 Pro or M4 Max and newer, especially with fast drives or several high-resolution displays.
  • Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gb/s): the sweet spot for most other Macs, including the base MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
  • USB-C: cheaper and fine for a keyboard, mouse, one display and charging.
  • Charging: about 70W for a MacBook Air, 85W or more for a MacBook Pro, 140W for the 16-inch Pro (Macworld).

Questions

Do I need a Thunderbolt 5 dock?

Only if your Mac has Thunderbolt 5 ports (MacBook Pro and Mac mini with M4 Pro or M4 Max and newer Pro and Max chips) and you use fast storage or several high-resolution displays. A Thunderbolt 5 dock also works on Thunderbolt 4 Macs, just at Thunderbolt 4 speed.

How much charging power does my MacBook need?

Macworld’s rule of thumb: about 70W is enough for a MacBook Air, 85W or more for a MacBook Pro, and 140W for the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Is a dock with an SSD worth it?

If you use one desk, yes: Time Machine backups and project files stay connected without an extra drive and cable. Check whether the SSD is built in or bring-your-own, the maximum capacity, and that the slot supports PCIe 4.0 for full speed.
